WHAT IS CHARACTER COUNTS?
At Joe Henderson we strive to not only to create lifelong learners in our students, but lifelong good citizens as well. The Character Counts! program we have implemented emphasizes the 6 Pillars of Character that govern how we treat each other. Research on the Character Counts! program shows dramatically reduced behavior problems, reduced truancy, and increased test scores.
Each month we focus on one character trait. At the beginning of the month each class develops a classroom definition for the trait and discusses what the trait looks like and sounds like. Character education is woven into every day classroom lessons and activities and throughout the month teachers look for a student who consistently demonstrates the month’s trait. At the end of each month these students are recognized by Mrs. Garton at a small ceremony where they are presented with a certificate, character pencil, and a special treat.
CHARACTER COUNTS STORE
All year long students have the opportunity to earn Character Paw Prints. Paw Prints are given out by Joe Henderson Staff to recognize students demonstrating good character. At the end of each month, the Character Counts store is open to students where they can redeem Paw Prints for Character prizes such as pencils, wristbands, stickers, and dog tags.
